City Limits Bar & Grill, Colby

City Limits Bar & Grill is a must-stop for travelers driving on KS I-70 who love an all-you-can-eat mega salad and soup bar. Other lunch menu items included burgers, chicken tenders, and hand-cut top sirloin. The food is downright delicious.

Trio Tap House, Hays

Trio Tap House claims they are a place to enjoy “an honest meal and a proper good time,” and they are right. I nestled into my seat and reviewed the menu. I was craving a hearty salad. The Dry Aged Steak & Blue checked all the boxes. Ask about the Soup of the Day.

McLain’s Market, Shawnee

McLain’s Market is where you go when craving fresh salads, sandwiches, and soups for lunch. You can expect hearty salads with a slice of sourdough bread. They also serve delicious coffee and delectable breakfast pastries.

Johnny’s Tavern, Lawrence

You can’t go wrong at Johnny’s Tavern, whether you order the Apple Walnut Crunch, Johnny’s Cobb, or Wedge salad. If you’re craving a savory bowl of soup, enjoy homemade chili, or ask about the Soup of the Day. House-made Jambalaya with andouille sausage brings the heat.

The Glass Cat, Bonner Springs

A day in Bonner Springs is enhanced by a chef-prepared salad at The Glass Cat. The latest addition to the town’s dining scene, it’s become a local favorite for its lunch menu options, which often include protein-topped salads. If you’re in the mood for a chicken salad sandwich made with homemade bread, you’re in luck.

Willie’s Sports Pub, Atchison

Every town needs a celebrated restaurant like Willie’s Sports Pub, where locals and visitors can gather for heaping plates of food and a cold drink. Enjoy a Chicken Club Salad, Smoked Chef Salad, or Grilled Steak Salad while you watch the game. Similar recipes appear on the Sandwiches and Wraps menu.

Union Street Social, Emporia

Union Street Social is the restaurant you always wished for, and now it’s here. The Smoked Salmon Salad includes perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs and warm bacon dressing served over microgreens and spinach. Menu options change, but you can always find a sprout salad or a garden salad.

Crown & Rye, Lindsborg

The Crown & Rye serves tasty meals, ranging from traditional Swedish dishes to burgers and salads. I recommend the Berry Salad, an iceberg and romaine salad topped with fresh berries, goat cheese, and the house vinaigrette. Other hearty meal options include the Crispy Chicken Salad and Cobb Salad.

The Local Table, Newton

I researched restaurants with healthy menus and identified The Local Table (3001 Ivy Dr.), located inside Bluestem Communities. The fresh meal options were impressive and tasted delicious.

A new addition to North Newton’s community, the restaurant offers a breakfast and lunch menu featuring salads and burgers.

This hidden gem always has a heart-healthy salad on the seasonal menu, worthy of ordering. Try the Garden Salad with Blue Cheese, Mandarin Oranges, Pistachios, Cranberries, and Egg.

The Local Table Newton Kansas serves dressing on the side of its salads.

Wichita

Sunflour Cafe & Collective

A haven for healthy eaters who need vegetarian-based dishes, Sunflour Cafe & Collective serves a rotating menu of salads in two portion sizes.

Cucumber Dill, Summer Tide, and Balsamic Fig current menu options, but check the front board for weekly specials.

Tanya’s Soup Kitchen

Tanya’s Soup Kitchen may be known for bowls of scratch-made soups and stews, but the restaurant’s salad menu deserves attention.

Order Cleopatra prepared with sliced chicken breast, apricot chutney, and feta cheese over mesclun for light lunch fare that delivers bold flavor. Four additional salad options are available using spinach or romaine lettuce.

Nortons Brewing Company

It’s not often that you find delectable salads on the menu at a brewery. At Nortons Brewing Company, the roughage menu lists three salads: Cilantro Lime Chicken Salad, Cobb Salad, and Side Salad – each served with house-made dressing. Come hungry because the super-sized salads are a meal that requires a fork and knife to eat.

Public at the Brickyard

Located in a historic building in Old Town, Public at the Brickyard is known for serving farm-to-table entrees using locally sourced greens. Typically, the menu features about four salads with the option to add protein (smoked salmon, anyone?) or substitute vegan cheese.

HoneyBee Bruncherie, Humboldt

At HoneyBee Bruncherie, the lunch menu draws diners seeking made-to-order favorites. Thai Like Salad and mixed green salads with seasonal fruits and vegetables are beautifully plated, each with a bowl of soup or sweet potato waffle fries.

Sharky’s Pub & Grub, Fort Scott

Sharky’s Pub & Grub towering sandwiches and seafood dishes may dominate the menu, but the Going Green section of the menu deserves a glance. Diners can choose from two salad options served with Texas toast and optional blue cheese crumbles.

TOAST, Pittsburg

Seekers of healthier dining who want to indulge in the season’s flavors should dine at TOAST, a restaurant known for sourcing local ingredients and artisan bread.

Celebrate an Old-Fashioned Christmas at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge

The dust kicked up behind the car’s tires as we made our final approach to Maxwell Wildlife Refuge (2565 Pueblo Rd) in Gypsum, Kansas. Male elk rested on a hill silhouetted in the distance. An adult bison grazed in the foreground.

Our adventure at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge’s Old-Fashioned Christmas on the Prairie was going to be the perfect outing.

Bison and Elk — The elk keep a safe distance from the bison during feeding time during the first tram tour of the day.

ABOUT MAXWELL WILDLIFE REFUGE

John Gault Maxwell, who immigrated from Scotland 1859, became a farmer grain dealer in McPherson County. He was enamored by the Kansas prairie and devoted to preserving it and the native wildlife.

After his death, he willed $75,000 to purchase land that is used by Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, a non-profit organization, to be used for educational purposes. Located on the Kansas Prairie Trail Scenic Byway, the refuge opened in 1951 with ten buffalo and six elk. Now, it flourishes with up to 250 animals each spring.

The contributions of Kansas Department of Wildlife, volunteers, and supporters make Maxwell Wildlife Refuge what it is today, one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Geography.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A VISIT

For those who love nature, there is no better place to spend the holiday or anytime of year than Maxwell Wildlife Refuge. Old-Fashioned Christmas on the Prairie is an opportunity for people of all ages to take a tram tour to view bison and elk before returning to the visitor’s center for cookies, cider, and hot chocolate.

Stagecoach — An authentic stagecoach makes for a nice photo backdrop. Kids love to climb inside and peek out from the windows.

The visitor’s center also serves as an education opportunity to learn about early settlers on the land and all types of wildlife from coyotes to large game that roam the region.

Arrowheads, pottery, and handmade tools made by Native Americans are on display to teach visitors about those who originally settled in the area.

GET UP CLOSE WITH WILDLIFE

During Old-Fashioned Christmas on the Prairie, we boarded a tram covered in windows and took a 45-minute tour of the prairie to view wildlife. Santa and Mrs. Claus waived goodbye as visitors boarded two trams of about 20 people each.

Keeping warm with a lap blanket, we listened to volunteer tour guide, Les, inform us about native grasses and wildlife.

He was a fantastic tour guide provide our group with extensive information about animal behavior as our tram followed the path of a feeder truck depositing pellets for the bison to eat.

We watched as the bison excitedly sought out food within feet of our tram. Stopping periodically, we took photos of the bison as they grazed, took dust baths, and communicated with their young. Calves ran to catch up with their mothers who kept a safe distance from dominant males.

Bison Feeding — According to National Wildlife Foundation, the first explores who came to the Great Plains estimated at least 30 million bison roamed the land. About 30,000 wild bison roam North America.

Our tram tour meandered through the prairie before making a u-turn to return to its starting point. Fortunately, we were able to see bison for most of the trip.

PRO TIP: You more likely to see elk from the tram tour if you reserve a seat on the first tram of the day. Once they feed, they roam to distant area of the prairie.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT

After the tour, tram passengers headed indoors to warm up and excitedly grabbed complimentary warm drinks and snacks. To the children’s delight, Santa and Mrs. Claus asked them to gather at their feet for storytime.

The looks on the kids’ faces was precious as each one became captivated by the narrative.

Parents snapped photos and chatted amongst themselves between bites of cupcakes and cookies. Afterward, Santa gifted a holiday-themed goodie bag to each child.

My take-home gift? I purchased postcards featuring photography taken by volunteers. Elk stood statuesque at sunset. Bison graze on prairie grasses under illuminated Kansas clouds.

I couldn’t resist taking my photo with Santa, who was eager to meet me. Perhaps I was the only adult who snapped a photo with the jolly ol’ guy? I felt like a kid again hoping for his approval and excited to tell him my Christmas wish.

TOUR CALENDAR & SPECIAL EVENTS

Old-Fashioned Christmas on the Prairie, which occurs four times every December, is one of many events at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge.

You can also reserve a seat on a public tram tour on the weekends or take a guided trail ride. Adventurers who attend Mountain Man Rendezvous during fall learn from reenactors what it was like to explore and trap on the land in the early 1800s. The refuge also hosts school groups for educational tours.

If you visit during the spring, you’ll see a multitude of newly-born calves and fields of Kansas wildflowers. View the refuge’s calendar of events.

Maxwell Wildlife Refuge — The herd of bison is one of the last of its kind roaming native Kansas prairie. Do you see the extra fur on this bison’s front legs? It’s referred to as pantaloons.

Battlehill RV Park provides fully equipped campsites in the area and nearby McPherson State Fishing Lake is a popular spot for anglers.

SCHEDULING A PRIVATE TOUR

Small group tours of the refuge via a suburban are available if scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. The duration of the tour depends on the chosen activities.

Bison During Winter — Male bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand nearly six feet tall, while females are smaller in stature. They have an acute sense of smell and strong eyesight.

UPCOMING PLANS AT THE REFUGE

A section of land with a trail system is under development allowing visitors a unique perspective of the area. Stay tuned for announcements via Maxwell Wildlife Refuge’s Facebook page or via its blog.

FINAL THOUGHTS

My time at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge was one I’ll never forget because it connected me with the Kansas prairie in a way I’ve never experienced before. I suspect you’ll feel the same after your visit.

Spice Up Your Life: Mexican Restaurants Worth Trying in Kansas

Is there any better visual than a table covered by a full spread of Mexican food? Towering bowls of warm tortilla chips, steaming bowls of pinto beans, each culinary delight waiting to be devoured between sips of a salty lime margarita.

Use my list of recommended Mexican food restaurants in Kansas as a taco trail, a bucket list to cross off as you journey from one eatery to the next.

By no means does this list reflect all the must-stop Mexican restaurants in the state, but instead restaurants that I’ve dine at in the last couple of years.

WICHITA

Las Delicias ICT

Have you tried fresh fruit with Chamoy sauce and Tajin seasoning? It’s sweet with a little heat. A popular menu item at Las Delicias ICT, Vaco de Fruta is a refreshing and healthy way to enjoy a treat any given day of the year. The Mexican eatery serves everything from Nachos Elote and Tostadas Cueritos to Ceviche with Chips.

Go on Waffle Wednesday to order a bubble waffle with ice cream and toppings and get the second one half off.

Tacos TJ 664

What restaurant would you choose to dine at for your birthday? For me, Tacos TJ 664 is at the top of the list. The restaurant was voted Wichita’s Most Like Taco in Wichita By E.B’s Ultimate Wichita Taco Tournament in 2020.

A steady line of customers waits at the register to order style tacos, birria ramen, or quesadilla with fries. Don’t forget to ask for extra green salsa (mild) and orange salsa (super spicy).

Taco Fajita

Taco Fajita serves authentic street tacos, the kind that are not always listed on Wichita Mexican restaurants’ menus. The three-bite taco is filled with your choice of meat, cilantro, and diced onions. They have several salsas to choose from, but I preferred the green salsa with medium heat compared to the hot orange salsa.

Hungry diners, or people seeking to share a meal, should order the infamous Machete. A massive corn tortilla is filled with your choice of meat, onions, peppers, and melted cheese.

Connie’s Mexico Cafe

The city’s north end is known for its recommendable selection of Mexican restaurants. Opened in 1963, Connie’s Mexico Cafe remains the oldest family-owned Mexican restaurant and one that continues to attract customers for its delicious food and friendly service.

When you go, ask about highly-requested dishes, including the Original King Size Burrito, Pork Chops with verde sauce, and Special Monterrey. I’ve been eating at Connie’s since I was a kid, and it remains on my list of favorites.

El Mexico Cafe

After my first dining experience at El Mexico Cafe, I listed it in the dining section of my book 100 Things To Do in Wichita Before You Die.Locally owned and operated for over four decades, El Mexico Cafe is well-liked by locals for its smothered burritos, enchiladas, tacos, and grilled fajitas.

The menu consists of Mexican cuisine standards, but everyone knows the shining star is the Deluxe Burrito. Ask about the daily special.

HUTCHINSON

Anchor Inn Mexican Restaurant

Over 1,500 near perfect Google reviews can’t be wrong. Anchor Inn Mexican Restaurant is a draw for diners craving fried flour shell tacos and heaping plates of traditional favorites from enchiladas to tostadas. The menu of Mexican Favorites also includes mega-sized burritos, sanchos, and chalupas.

The restaurant is spacious in size and the festive decorations make it a popular place for large group parties.

GREAT BEND

Los Cabos Fajita House

Dinner platters arrive sizzling hot at Los Cabos Fajitas House (619 Main Street), a restaurant known for its multi-page menu featuring tacos, burritos, and, of course, fajitas.

I devoured a traditional chicken and chorizo entreé with savory beans, rice, and warm tortillas. After a visit to the Salsa Bar, I topped each bite with a creamy avocado salsa for added heat. Visit the restaurant on Taco Tuesday for $2 tacos with your choice of six meats.

Mary’s Kitchen

In our quest to discover the best Mexican food in Great Bend, we dined at Mary’s Kitchen (2416 10th Street). The small, unassuming building welcomes a steady flow of regular customers six days a week.

The smell of carne asada permeated the air as we ordered street tacos and burritos for an early lunch. The food was crave-worthy. Mary’s Kitchen deserves its stellar online reviews. Buy extra breakfast burritos to go.

WELLINGTON

Fabiola’s Restaurant

Since 1997, Fabiola’s Restaurant has attracted regular customers. By consistently serving good food and providing friendly service, it’s easy to see why.

For dinner, I chose a beef fajita bowl, Kristi’s Special, made with grilled onions, peppers, beans, queso, and adorned with a tomato rose. The meat was tender, and the outer shell was crisp.My server recommended that I save room for dessert, and even though I was full, I couldn’t turn down caramel churros with vanilla ice cream drizzled with honey and chocolate. 100% delicious.

ATCHISON

Lopez de Mexico

Colorful overhead flags and booths decorated with framed family photos set the scene at Lopez de Mexico, a family-operated restaurant in the heart of downtown Atchison. I was fortunate to visit with the owner, Ann, who shared how she studied her grandmother’s recipes and opened the restaurant 27 years ago.

The restaurant is known for its crispy beef tacos, which to my delight, were a lunch special the day of my visit.

COFFEYVILLE

El Pueblito Mexican Restaurant

Where do you eat when nearly every local you ask suggests the same place? El Pueblito. The Mexican restaurant serves a traditional classic menu plus a full bar of drinks at Cantina Margaritaville – the locals rave about the margaritas.

The #3 Lunch Special Ground Beef Taco & Enchilada served with rice and beans is a tasty meal for the value. Add delicious homemade salsa on top.

SCOTT CITY

The Original Grande

The Original Grande (1201 Main Street) serves fast casual Mexican food meant to “fuel your inner fiesta.”

One of two locations in Kansas, The Original Grande’s menu features menu items such as taco burgers, macho tacho, and my favorite, the nachos supreme.

I loved the concept of adding my selection of condiments from the Keep It Saucey station, adding pico de gallo and hot sauce to my heaping mound of nachos.

GARDEN CITY

Casa Mariachi

Mega margaritas, sizzling tacos, and smothered burritos are some of the delectable menu items at Casa Mariachi (125 W Pine Street). But first, sample their chips and salsa, which are some of the best in the state.

Chomp chips while you peruse the six-page menu and listen to Mexican dance music over the speakers.

Whether you’re visiting Casa Mariachi for a lunch or dinner date or watching soccer while devouring a scrumptious meal, the festive vibe and menu selections deliver a party vibe

MANHATTAN

Taco Lucha

Nestled deep in the heart of Aggieville, Taco Lucha calls itself “a full sit down, cocktail driven, funky Aggieville taqueria.” From the moment you walk into the restaurant, you are greeted with colorful lights set against a dimly lit eclectic interior.

We made fast friends at the bar while dining on spicy jalapeño poppers, stuffed tacos, and a mega burrito (ask about the “secret menu” options). I plan on trying the popular Raspberry Bean Dip on a return visit.

El Patron

El Patron is known for serving street tacos using fresh ingredients and was ready to order. With festive Mexican music playing in the background, I dove into soft shell tacos filled with beef and BACON. My taste buds went into overdrive.

I know what you’re thinking, but hold on. You haven’t lived if you haven’t tasted bacon in a street taco.

DODGE CITY

Tacos El Torito

Tacos El Torito is a highly-rated food truck where diners order at the window and then wait for authentic Mexican food dishes to be delivered to their cars.

On Tuesdays, tacos are $1.50 unless otherwise advertised. The tacos are stuffed so full you may need to eat them with two hands. Nachos are made with melted cheese topped with the protein of your choice. Try an authentic tamale for real-deal flavor.

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS

Tacos El Guero

A trusted foodie friend told me were to find delicious street tacos made fresh to order, and he didn’t steer me wrong.

At Tacos El Guero, you can expect steaming hot carne asada from the grill nestled inside soft tortillas topped with white onion, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. The birria and pastor tacos are equally scrumptious. Use the squeeze bottle hot sauces.

I recommend order three tacos for a meal with a bottle of Coca-Cola to wash it down.

El Toro Loco Mexican Bar & Grill

Give El Toro Loco a try, especially if you love a good chili relleño. I ordered chile relleños in many places and I know a good one when I taste it. The cheese was delicious and the battered and fried pepper was perfectly crisp.

Specializing in street tacos, tamales, and other Mexican dishes, it’s a ideal choice for tourists who need a break from shopping at Legend’s Outlets.

El Torito

Kansas City’s cultural roots run deep whether its during Día de Muertos (Day of the Day) of another day of the year. At El Torito, you can enjoy traditional Mexican dishes prepared to order using grilled meats topped with fresh produce and queso fresco.

Flautas, quesabirrias, chilaquiles highlight the menu, but my recommendation is to order a heaping plate of nachos to sustain you through a day of exploring Kansas City. Leave room for flan or tres leches cake.

Jarocho’s Pescados y Mariscos

Continue the cultural journey to Jarocho’s Pescados y Mariscos (719 Kansas Ave.) where high-quality Mexican seafood is served.

Bring your appetite and prepare to be wowed by fresh seafood dishes like Shrimp Chipotle, Fire Grilled Trout, and Seafood Paella. They didn’t win Best Seafood and Best Mexican Food by Feast magazine for nothing.

Three Bees Pottery & Coffee Shop

Three Bees Pottery & Coffee Shop (925 Southwest Blvd) is a quaint eatery specializing in homemade meat and vegan tamales paired with gourmet coffee drinks.

If you’ve not enjoyed tamale, you can expect shredded chicken, pork, or beef in sauce wrapped in masa inside a corn husk. The dish represents traditional food brought to the states by Mexican immigrant populations. Order a Dirty Horchata served hot to accompany my meal.

ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI

It’s time to “Get to Know Jo,” aka St. Joseph, Missouri, a town on Highway 36, The Way of American Genius. This town offers visitors distinctive museums, dining, and charming accommodations.

If you visited St. Joseph years ago, rediscover it during an overnight stay. It’s only a 30-minute drive from Kansas City.

Café Belle Epoque

During an early morning visit to Mokaska Coffee Company (750 Edmond Street), instrumental jazz plays while the barista steams milk behind the bar. The dog-friendly downtown café is a hub for locals who often order coffee to go.

At lunchtime, stepping into Café Belle Epoque‘s cozy dining room conjures up thoughts of leisurely lunches with friends. It’s the kind of restaurant where you want to order a Pear Moscow Mule from the bar while you wait for artfully plated sandwiches and salads to arrive at the table.One wouldn’t expect to discover authentic Cajun and Creole food served in Missouri, but then they haven’t dined at Boudreaux’s Louisiana Seafood & Steaks (224 N. 4th Street). The thematic restaurant, located in a historic downtown building, is a bustling place during the dinner hour on a weekday.

OLATHE, KANSAS

Follow the winery, brewery, and sweet treats trail in Olathe. The northeastern suburb near Kansas City offers visitors plenty of places to sip and savor. If you love coffee and pastries, palate-pleasing wine, craft beer, or barbecue, you’ll love Olathe.

Start the day at Sweet Tee’s Coffee Shop for a frothy latté and a fresh-from-the-oven muffin.

Tall Trellis Brew Co. offers a relaxed setting in which to devour a flatbread pizza with a Snaps Chaps Western IPA. Consider dining on the outdoor patio surrounded by trellised hops.

At dinnertime, Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Cue serves up award-winning barbecue. Order the famous Z-Man Sandwich prepared with slow-smoked brisket, cheese, and onion rings.

BONNER SPRINGS, KANSAS

I’ve traveled to Bonners Springs several times and each trip was highlighted by excellent food and drink experiences.

I recommend welcoming the day at Ten and Two Coffee Bar for delicious breakfast burritos or The Glass Cat, where the breakfast hash and eggs are delightful.

Get your steps in by shopping downtown before heading back to Mill Properties, where Quentin’s BBQ & Sides serves mouthwatering BBQ Nachos and Burnt End Mac Bowl.

At dinnertime, bring friends to Kobi’s Bar & Grill, where the Friday ribeye dinner special or the menu’s Surf-n-Turf entree keep regulars coming back. Order a bottled beer or cocktail and head outside for live music on the back patio.

LAWRENCE, KANSAS

Chef-prepared cuisine and craft beverages are a draw for residents and visitors to Lawrence. Everyone agrees Free State Brewing Co. is a top destination for elevated pub grub and a flagship beer. Order the Nashville Chicken Mac with an Ad Astra Ale or Stormchaser IPA.

Johnny’s Tavern is where you should dine when lunchtime cravings hit. They serve some of the best pizza in Lawrence. Try the Great Bambino. Also known for serving the coldest pint of beer in town, it’s a fun place to watch collegiate football on the big screen.

Cocktail enthusiasts should make a reservation at John Brown’s Underground. The space transports you to a surreal environment with low lighting, mood music, and a drink menu that reads like an excerpt from someone’s diary.

LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS

Leavenworth is ideal for a day trip with more than enough places to dine and drink.

The Depot is an always-busy restaurant located inside a beautifully restored Santa Fe train depot established in 1887. Voted Best Breakfast & Brunch, the restaurant serves an excellent Broken Yolk Sandwich (ask for a complimentary “duffin” before your check arrives).

For lunch, soup and sandwiches like the Gobble-Gobble or the Roast Beef Explosion are popular choices at First City Cheese Market.

Pasta fans will feel at home dinging at Luigi’s 418 Italian Restaurant where classic dishes like The Picatta wow patrons. Afterward, a chilled glass of house-made Limoncello liqueur completes the meal.

MANHATTAN, KANSAS

Any day spent exploring Manhattan is a good one, especially when you have access to some of the best attractions in the state in the heart of The Little Apple.

There is a reason they refer to the town as “Manhappening,” a sensibility you come to understand quickly.

From dining and cocktail lounges to exploring the outdoors and touring museums, there is more than enough to do. Choose your fun using my round-up itinerary.

OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS

You don’t have to travel to the heart of Kansas City to enjoy an award-winning barbecue meal. When hunger roars, lunch or dinner at Q39 (South) in Overland Park is the only dining place.

The restaurant consistently serves mouthwatering smoked meats with sides of your choice ranging from creamy potato salad to five cheese mac topped with breadcrumbs.

I typically order a Combo Plate (Pick 2) for lunch or dinner; however, the Wood-Fired Grilled Salmon Salad and Smoked Brisket Nachos are calling my name. If you have room for dessert, a mega-sized slice of carrot cake is a shareable treat.

SHAWNEE, KANSAS

“Good Starts Here” is the phrase Shawnee uses to describe itself. I wholeheartedly agree.

Before heading out for shopping and museum visits, enjoy coffee and a scone amongst the gardens at Cafe Equinox.

Kids of all ages will appreciate watching oy trains overhead deliver food to each table at Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant at lunchtime. An old-fashioned hamburger with homemade onion rings and a cup of vanilla ice cream hit the spot.

District Pour House + Kitchen offers diners signature flatbreads, appetizing salads, and dinner entrees you won’t find elsewhere. Duck Risotto, anyone? Ask about cocktails made with homemade infused spirits.

Nashville Blues and Barbecue: A Soundtrack for a Savory City

A city with over 180 music venues, Nashville, Tennessee, has a long history of producing excellent blue music and crave-worthy barbecue.

People commonly think of Nashville as the World Capital of Country Music, and they are not wrong, but it’s also a city the honors the influence of blues from its celebration of music to food.

The community draws musicians of various genres because of its respect for songwriters. Musicians including Keb’ Mo’, Joe Bonamassa, B.B. King, and Etta James have all performed or recorded music in Nashville.

Rhythm & Blues music has flourished in the city since the term was coined during the late 1940s. Incorporating gospel influences, the genre was played on Nashville radio stations to eager fans.

Take a Tour

National Museum of African American Music

The National Museum of African American Music (510 Broadway) is the newest museum in downtown Nashville. While all of its interactive exhibits celebrate various music genres, the Crossroads exhibit emphasizes how “blues music changed the world.”

The stories of musicians come alive with audio and visual accounts of their contributions. From the work songs created by sharecroppers to the work of today’s blues musicians who’ve gone on to win Grammy’s, each display case and thoughtfully designed panel tells their story.

I loved learning how each musician influenced another and the collaborations are endless.

Like me, I think you’ll find the displays showcasing the clothing and guitars particularly interesting. I gravitated to Keb’ Mo’s electric guitar and artists’ song lyrics visible behind display case glass.

The Crossroads gallery tells the chronological story of the blues from its migration from the Deep South north to cities including Nashville.

PRO TIP: For an additional $5 dollars, you can use a RFID bracelet to interact with tech-savvy displays that allow you to save custom music you create and email it to yourself.

Ryman Auditorium

Ryman Auditorium (116 Rep. John Lewis Way North) is considered one of the most iconic stages to perform for a good reason. Also referred to as Nashville’s Mother Church, it was the original site of the Grand Ole Opry.

As they say, “all are welcome” and this sentiment extends beyond merely hosting country music stars. Blues musicians have also graced the Ryman’s stage, including but not limited to Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, and Blues Traveler.

Museum-quality illuminated glass cases caught my eye during a tour displaying iconic memorabilia. Elvis’ winter coat. Johnny Cash’s acoustic guitar. B.B. King’s blazer.

Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum

Take a deep dive into the history of music at the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum (401 Gay Street) where many of the exhibits highlight every genre from rock-n-roll to country and blues to bluegrass.

BB King — According to The Tennessean, B.B. King’s first recordings were for Bullet Records in Nashville. King once said, “The Blues? It’s the mother of American music.”

Inductees into the Musicians Hall of Fame include Buddy Guy and Steve Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble, and the museum includes references to their work.

If you’re looking for a multi-sensory experience, I recommend touring the Jimi Hendrix Exhibit, which will pleasantly surprise you.

Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum is the kind of place music lovers could spend at least an hour exploring. If you use the technology stations to make music, plan on a two-hour museum experience.

Sun Records — “Folsom Prison Blues” was recorded by Johnny Cash at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee in 1954.

PRO TIP: A tour through the GRAMMY® Museum Gallery is a must-have experience to try your hand a creating and recording museum like a pro (drum lesson with Ringo Star, anyone?).

Third Man Records

Did you know that musician Jack White’s Third Man Records (637 7th Ave. S.) is home to a recording studio? Musicians can play a live show in the Blue Room Bar while their sound is recorded direct-to-acetate available on vinyl after it’s complete.

The creative genius behind the process, Jack White, originally of the band The White Stripes, not only is a fan of blues music but also has recorded blues-inspired music of his own.

Third Man Records Retail Shop — According to *Rolling Stone*, The White Stripes dedicated their 2000 album to bluesman Blind Willie McTell and covered one of his songs, “Southern Can Is Mine.”

A fan of the genre, I appreciate his album “Jack White’s Blues-Uncut” featuring 15 cover songs of artists ranging from Howlin’ Wolf to Robert Johnson.

Savor Finger-Licking Barbecue

Peg Leg Porker

Indulge in real-deal barbecue at Peg Leg Porker (903 Gleaves St.) where ribs are the most requested menu item. Owners Carey and Delaniah Bringle decided to open the restaurant in 2013 after running a successful catering business.

Their award-winning barbecue is served with southern hospitality, and if you’re lucky, Carey might swing by your table for a casual chat during the meal.

Menu favorites include heaping BBQ Nachos, Memphis Sushi, and Dry Rubbed Ribs, but when in doubt, opt for the shareable Combo Platter.

PRO TIP: Leave room for banana pudding or a drool-worthy fried pie fresh from the oven.

Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint

Since 2006, Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint has served smoked meat classics from trays of mouth-watering pulled pork shoulder to the Big Ole Smoked Bologna sandwich. Non-traditional menu items make a menu appearance as well. The Redneck Taco served with a choice of two meats and the Brisket Tacos keep diners returning.

You can expect come-as-you-are atmosphere at each of their three Nashville locations.

PRO TIP: Make time before or after your meal to get a glimpse of the downtown location‘s Pit House, play a yard game, or listen to live music.

Edley’s Bar-B-Que

Grab a friend and head over to Edley’s Bar-B-Que for a shareable platter for Nashville Hot Links, BBQ Nachos, or perfected Smoked Wings. The amily owned and operated barbecue restaurant opens for lunch and stay open well into the night “’til the last drink is poured.”

With multiple locations to choose from, diners can easily find one near them.

PRO TIP: Use cooking tips and recipes from Edley’s postmasters to kick up your home cooking a notch.

Listen to Live Music

Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar

A bonus of listening to exceptional live music in Nashville? No cover charge. Tips appreciated.

Musicians, like the artists cranking out tunes at Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar (220 Printers Alley) let the good times roll in the New Orleans-themed establishment.

Blues can be heard escaping from the door on historic Printers Alley, but inside the house is rocking and the kitchen is busy preparing etoufee and gumbo.

Seating in the bar is limited, and due to its popularity, reserving seats is necessary Wednesday-Saturday. No need for reservations on Monday or Tuesday when walk-in seating is welcomed. View the venue’s upcoming show schedule.

PRO TIP: Seating is cozy. If loud music in a smaller bar bothers you, bring earplugs.

Shop for a Guitar

Gibson Garage

Are you feeling inspired to strum strings? Opened in 2021, Gibson Garage (209 10th Avenue, Suite 209) in the heart of downtown Nashville is where music-lovers gravitate to shop for gear or attend a live performance.

Part retail store, part venue, it’s candyland for guitar enthusiasts. Plus, it’s not uncommon for celebrities to stop by. Chris Stapleton sat down and strummed a few chords. Slash of Guns-N-Roses made an appearance. (Gibson carries the signature Slash Collection.)
